Earlier this year the government of Canada released a report saying Canada’s declining economy could collapse by 2040, which according to the report, could force average Canadians into foraging or hunting wildlife to survive.
That is the worst-case scenario; it doesn’t mean it’s likely to happen. But the fact that the government published this report is a damning indictment of Canada’s current economic policies.
My fellow Canadians had an opportunity to reverse the current economic trajectory. Instead, last night, they voted to keep Justin Trudeau’s key economic advisor, Mark Carney, as the Prime Minister.
However, as concerning as Canada’s economy is—especially after Trump’s irrational tariffs—the faltering economy isn’t nearly the most depressing issue in the country. Canada probably has the most dehumanizing laws in the world.
Canada is the only country in the world with zero restrictions on abortion. Everywhere in Canada, it’s legal to kill a baby 5 minutes before they are born. Canada also has one of the worst euthanasia laws in the world. Euthanasia is the 5th leading cause of death in the country.
On top of that, Canada also has some of the worst laws on LGBT issues. Because of the conversion therapy ban, Christians who attempt to convert LGBT people to Christianity could face criminal charges. And most provinces cover transgender “surgeries” through Canada’s socialist healthcare system.
When Canada abandoned its Christian roots decades ago, it dishonoured God and it therefore resolved to dishonour those made in his image. So Canada is facing the consequences of its actions: judgment from God.
It’s the only explanation I have for why Canadians have voted for the Liberal Party 4 times in a row despite their disastrous leadership. Why else would Canadians demand Justin Trudeau’s resignation and elect an even worse version of him just a few months later?
Last night my good friend and fellow believer Jamil Jivani maintained his seat in Parliament. That is perhaps the only good news I received last night. At the end of 2024, Pierre Poilievre had a 25-point lead over Justin Trudeau in the polls. But after the end of the election last night, he couldn’t even keep his seat in parliament.
That doesn’t mean Pierre Poilievre would have been an extraordinary gift from God. Though I wanted him to become our newest Prime Minister over Carney, his Conservative platform is also a sign of God’s judgment. This wasn’t an election over good versus evil. It was an election over the lesser evil vs the greater evil. Despite some of his great traits, Pierre Poilievre is maybe the most liberal Conservative leader in Canadian history after Erin O’Toole.
I understand that the current social and political climate in Canada isn’t welcoming to social conservatives. But his positions on abortion, MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying), and other social issues are disappointing.
However, since he is surrounded by people like Jivani, Christians like me hoped that he was a sign that maybe God would restrain some evil in Canada. The election results suggest otherwise.
But Christians in Canada shouldn’t be anxious. Canada has abandoned God, but God hasn’t abandoned Canada.
The truth is, Jagmeet Singh, Doug Ford, Justin Trudeau, the Governor General, the Laurentian elites, Donald Trump, and even foolish Canadian voters aren’t primarily responsible for electing Mark Carney as the Prime Minister of Canada: God is.
Mark Carney was elected by a single vote. That single vote was cast by divine hands in heaven.
God elected Mark Carney. He is the Prime Minister because God ordained it.
That doesn’t mean some people aren’t responsible for this. It just means that we Canadians might make our plans, but it’s God who directs our steps (Proverbs 16:9). And for believers, those steps are cemented with grace.
There is still a remnant of God’s people in Canada. Some of their names are Cecilia, Gideon, Sophia, Murray, Nadia, and Kaleb. Their God will do what is just. He has not abandoned them. He could spare judgment on Canada for their sake (Genesis 18:24-26).
Canada’s official motto is still “A mari usque ad mare”, which means “From sea to sea.” It’s taken directly from Psalm 72, which says: [Jesus] shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.”
So even this morning, from sea to sea, Jesus is still king in Canada. He is King Charles’ king. He is Mark Carney’s king. He is Justin Trudeau’s king. He is your king. He is the King of Kings and the true sovereign ruler of Canada. Nothing can change that.
God’s plans for Canada were established long before Justin Trudeau or Mark Carney. Heaven wasn’t interrupted by the election last night. Yes, wicked leaders are scheming against Christians, but God is laughing at them because he sees that their day is coming (Psalm 37:12-13.
So dear Christian in Canada, remember what God says in Philippians 4:4-7:
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
